The High Rise portion serves to facilitate marine navigation in the Bay. It rises 140 feet above the Bay, and extends over the marine navigational channel, with a single 750' long span. The High Rise is 1.85 miles long and carries three lanes in each direction. The seismic retrofit of the High Rise will entail :
strenghtening the components of the bridge superstructure;
streghtening the bearings that connect piers to the bridge superstructure;
adding steel casings around existing concrete pin, making them stronger and refocusing forces vertically into the ground;
installing a three-foot-thick concrete overlay to reinforce those piers with a rectangular foundation;
installing a steel casing to reinforce those piers with a bell shaped foundation;
driving several large-diameter hollow steel piles into the mud to increase foundation lateral stability; and
installing displacement capacity joints at Pier 38 and adding a new pier, Pier 38A, to help resist seismic thrust from the Trestle.
