The Trestle portion represents the majority of the Bridge, connecting the High Rise with the eastern shore of the Bay. The Trestle is 5.15 miles long, and consists of 877 thirty-foot spans. This portion carries two lanes in each direction, and for the majority of its length is only 10 feet above the Bay. The seismic retrofit of the Trestle will entail.
strengthening the connection between segments of the Bridge deck by bolting steel channels to the existing girders;
solidifying the transition from the High Rise to the Trestle by driving 20 additional steel piles into the Bay mud at the westernmost end of the Trestle; and
adding an expansion element at the westernmost end of the Trestle. This element will reduce the transfer of force between the Trestle and the High Rise during an earthquake.
