Bay Area Toll Bridges

San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge Retrofit

West span: Encompasses the suspension bridge between the San Francisco and Yerba Buena Island anchorage structures.  Strengthen various support structures including the anchorages, towers and piers.  The retrofit strategy is comprised of three segments: a) foundation caissons, b) west span anchorages, and c) Steel towers and superstructures (upper and lower decks).

West Viaduct: Connects the west span suspension bridge to the Yerba Buena tunnel.  Strengthen various pier structures by installing high strength steel rods, anchor bolts, reinforcement to pier pedestals, and adding concrete jackets.

Yerba Buena Island tunnel: Specific actions have not been finalized.

ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES: The project is statutorily exempt under CEQA.  Permits from the US Coast Guard, US Army Corp of Engineers, San Francisco Regional Water Quality Control Board (RWQCB), California Department of fish and game (CDFG) and San Francisco Bay Conservation and Development Commission (BCDC).

US COAST GUARD ISSUES:

  • Repair in kind under existing bridge permit

  • Permit for state contractors to access Yerba Buena island for construction

  • Coordination of construction on the bridge with Yerba Buena Island Coast Guard personnel

  • All work within San Francisco waters will be performed from barges and from bridge structure.

  • Coastal advance warning system will be used to communicate with shipping traffic.
