The retrofit strategy is comprised of three segments: a) foundation caissons, b) west span anchorages, and c) Steel towers and superstructures (upper and lower decks).
West Viaduct: Connects the west span suspension bridge to the Yerba Buena tunnel. Strengthen various pier structures by installing high strength steel rods, anchor bolts, reinforcement to pier pedestals, and adding concrete jackets.
Yerba Buena Island tunnel: Specific actions have not been finalized.
The project is statutorily exempt under CEQA. Permits from the US Coast Guard, US Army Corp of Engineers, San Francisco Regional Water Quality Control Board (RWQCB), California Department of fish and game (CDFG) and San Francisco Bay Conservation and Development Commission (BCDC).
