Cal-NExUS (California Numbered Exit Uniform System)
In February 2002, the California Department of Transportation (Department) announced that California will begin numbering exits on freeways across the Golden State.
More than 23,000 signs featuring exit numbers with highly reflective sheeting and lettering will be placed at 5,984 freeway exits on 93 different routes. During the first six years (73 months) of implementation of this program, 7,275 updated signs with exit numbers have been installed at 3,415 freeway exits.
"Numbering exits will help travelers find their way in areas unfamiliar to them, determine distances and travel mileage. The new signs will be much more visible at night and thus increase highway safety," said Director Jeff Morales.
The first freeways to receive the new numbered signs include Interstate 5 between the Mexico and Oregon borders, Highway 101, Interstate 80 between Sacramento and the Nevada border, and Interstate 10 between downtown Los Angeles and Santa Monica.
To minimize costs, the new exit number signs will take advantage of existing roadside and overhead signs. Where possible, add-on plates will be used. In some cases, a new sign will be installed.
"Many of the signs on our highways were put in place 30 to 40 years ago and are due for replacement. When sign age is a factor, the signs will be replaced with new ones containing the exit number," said Director Morales.
Exits will be numbered from south to north, and west to east. Each exit number is determined by the number of miles it is from the beginning of the route. For example, on Interstate 5, exit No. 1 will be just north of the Mexican border. Numbering will continue all the way to the last off-ramp (EXIT 796) before the freeway enters Oregon, 796 miles north of the Mexico/California border.
