Park and Ride Demand Management
Increased congestion, mobility demands, population growth, air pollution, greenhouse gas production, and the need for livable communities are all reasons to design our transportation systems in a more balanced, sustainable, and multimodal manner. True impacts of park-and-ride lots to total transportation system performance are currently unknown. The current and future park-and-ride lot network is an under-utilized resource with the potential to make a more of a positive difference on regional mobility. By quantifying existing and potential impacts, this project can increase carpooling, more seamlessly link individuals to transit, and reduce the number of vehicles on the roadway to address future demand.
There are many ways to analyze how best to integrate park and ride lots into our transportation network, including transportation models and case studies. Transportation models must include the park-and-ride lot network or the analysis results produced will be incomplete. Without including park-and-ride lots in existing and developing transportation models, their impact on the system will not be quantified and they will continue to be an underutilized resource. Travel Demand Management activities also must incorporate park-and-ride lots to increase carpools, increase transit usage, and increase person throughput along congested corridors. Before and after case studies involving building new park and ride lots or improving existing park and ride lots will help us better understand the role of these facilities on our transportation system.
