Bird Species Identification and Population Estimation by Computerized Sound Analysis

This research is to develop a bird species identification and population estimation system that has the potential to lower the costs and reduce the amount of time required for environmental compliance. Environmental law requires Caltrans to forecast and mitigate environmental impacts. In California there are 619 bird species, of these, the state or federal governments list 33 bird species as threatened or endangered and nearly all birds have protection under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act. Bird surveys can be time consuming and expensive. Developing a bird species identification and population estimation system has the potential to lower the costs and reduce the amount of time required for environmental compliance. The system will be designed for expansion to other species such as bats and amphibians
