About Us

The California Department of Transportation Microsimulation Branch in the Division of Transportation System Information (TSI), Office of Travel Forecasting and Analysis, is located in Sacramento Headquarters. The branch is responsible for exploring the latest modeling simulation tools and assisting the Districts in meeting the challenges associated with the planning and designing of multi-modal transportation solutions. The tools researched are Microscopic, Macroscopic, and Mesoscopic simulation tools. A definition of these terms may be found on the page “What Is Traffic Modeling?” on this website.

Transportation Simulation Modeling provides planners and designers with information on the unique, as well as the common, operating characteristics of a particualar part of the transportation system. This information is critical in maintaining the safe & efficient operation of the system. The information is also significant in helping planners and engineers identify complex problems in the network and test alternative solutions.

Microsimulation models provide easy to understand graphic outputs and simulation animation that enables the decision maker and the layperson to better understand traffic problems and the solutions that may be possible. Microsimulation is an excellent tool to illustrate the possible effects of decisions to the general public. Changes in the transportation system from increased traffic or changes in traffic patterns can be easily understood by the layperson by watching a simulation, rather than by studying a table of mathematical values and theories.
