Signs and Workzones Branch

What We Do: The Signs and Work Zones Branch is responsible for rules and regulations contained in Part 2 (Signs) and Part 6 (Temporary Traffic Control) of the California MUTCD.  We provide technical assistance to government entities and the public.  We prescribe uniform standards and specifications for official traffic signs to be used on streets and highways in California. We are responsible for Caltrans standard specifications, standard plans and special provisions pertaining to signs and traffic control on State highway construction projects.  We are responsible for the administration of contracts for procurement of traffic signs to be used on State highways.

Recent Events: As of January 13, 2012 California Department of Transportation has adopted the California Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (California MUTCD) 2012 edition to provide for uniform standards and specifications for all official traffic control devices in California. This action was taken pursuant to the provisions of California Vehicle Code Section 21400 and the recommendation of the California Traffic Control Devices Committee (CTCDC). The Department requested and has received a letter to confirm substantial conformance from the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) for California MUTCD 2012 edition.
