Welcome to the Traffic Data Branch
The Traffic Data Branch is responsible for the collection
and dissemination of historical data. TRAFFIC COUNTS (also contained in the Traffic Volumes Book)
are available in various formats, and the counts are only for the State Highway System. We do not collect traffic
count information on locally maintained streets. The Traffic Volumes Book at the link above is a large file and may take a few minutes to download.
If you'd like to perform an online search instead, please use one of the year links under "1. Traffic Volumes" below.
State Highways are signed Interstate, California, and the US. Examples are pictured below:

Although we do not collect traffic count information on locally maintained streets, links to that information are provided here as a courtesy. Most local data is available from the City or County Public Works Department, Traffic Engineers office, in the area where the street is located.
Caltrans traffic counts are summarized annually into three publications. Necessary software to download .pdf files can be obtained for free by clicking on the desired link in the grey column on the right side of this page:
1. Traffic Volumes (Annual Average Daily Traffic (AADT)) for all vehicles on California State Hwys. For an online search by route, click on one of the following: 2008, 2009, 2010.
2. Truck Traffic (Annual Average Daily Truck Traffic) on Calif. State Hwys. For a downloadable format in pdf, click on the following: 2009.pdf or 2010.pdf.
For those with accessibility needs, the 2008 and 2009 Truck reports are also available in .doc format: 2008Truckdoc and 2009Truckdoc.

The Peak Hour Volume Data Report (.pdf) consists of hourly volume relationships and traffic monitoring sites on the State highway system. Morning (AM) and afternoon/evening (PM) peak periods are expressed as a percentage of Annual Average Daily Traffic (AADT). The Traffic Data Unit provides historical data, normally in total volumes, Annual Average Daily Traffic (AADT), and some historical speed data reports.
* For more specific reports, surveys, forecast documents, especially related to fuel consumption, Commercial Truck VMT, and VMT data per capita, for example, please use the link at the bottom of this page to connect to another Caltrans Division, Transportation System Information (TSI).
The Traffic Data Branch also produces a monthly Vehicle Miles of Travel (VMT) report (often called the "Trend" report). This report estimates the number of vehicle miles that motorists traveled on California State Highways using a sampling of up to 20 traffic monitoring sites. Various roadway types are used to calculate VMT. The VMT report for any given month is generally available and posted to this site by the last week of the following month (for example, January's data is available at the end of February).
Year 2008: January, February, March, April, May, June, July, August, September, October, November, December.
Year 2009: January, February, March, April, May, June, July, August, September, October, November, December.
Year 2010: January, February, March, April, May, June, July, August, September, October, November, December.
Year 2011: January, February, March, April, May, June, July, August, September, October, November, December.
For information regarding the Monthly Trend Reports or historical speed data, please contact: Viki_Duncan@dot.ca.gov
NOTE: 5/11/2012
We are currently experiencing technical difficulties with our database and specific report functions, and are not able to provide historical speed data at this time. Thank you for your patience in this matter.
