Part III Section 2

This section of the annual report presents the methods in which your agency informed both employees and customers served that a recycling program was being implemented. Below are identified the programs you reported were continued or implemented during 2001.

 1.   Brochures, Newsletters, Publications
 2.   Fliers
 3.   Awards Program/Public Awareness
 4.   Other Promotional Programs

Part III Section 3

Procurement Activities Implemented in 2001

This section of the annual report presents your compliance with the State Agency Buy Recycled Campaign (SABRC). The activities identified below were reported as implemented or continued during 2001. (Note: Completing this section does not meet the SABRC reporting requirements (PCC Section 12162(b)).

1. Requiring Recycled- Content Product Certification for All Purchases
2. Participating in Dept. of General Services Buy Recycled Task Force
3. Proactively Working With RCP Suppliers
4. Other Procurement Activities

Part IV

1 .  Is the mission statement of the State agency/large State facility the same as reported in the Integrated Waste Management Plan?

If the answer to 1 is No, What is the new mission statement?

Caltrans improves mobility across California.

2 .  How has the waste stream, i.e. those materials disposed in landfills, changed since the Integrated Waste Management Plan was submitted?

We have been told by our major disposal company that virtually all of our disposal is non-recyclable.

3 .  What waste diversion programs are currently in place and what waste diversion programs were implemented in 2001 to meet the waste diversion goals?

We relied mostly on our previous recycling programs throughout the last year. There has been more involvement in the purchase of recycled materials. More awareness and promotion programs are planned for this year.

4 .  How were the amounts of materials disposed and diverted, that were entered into the Annual Report, determined (e.g. waste assessments, per capita generation and extrapolation, actual disposal weights, or actual recycling weights)?

Diverted amounts were estimated by Caltrans employees or contracted Recycling firms based on their knowledge of recycled materials. Disposed amounts were estimated by our Disposal company and were based on the average amount of monthly pickups and the average estimated weight of a waste bin.

5 .  What types of activities are included in each of the reported programs? For example does your agency Business Source Reduction include email, double-sided photocopying, reusing envelopes, etc.?

Business Source Reduction includes e-mail, automated forms, recycling envelopes, increased verbal communication and two-sided copies. Material exchange includes the donation of surplus computers and furniture to schools and others in need of it. We were also able to reuse much of our surplus furniture by donating it to other divisions and new employees that needed it.

6 .  Has the State agency/large State facility adopted or changed it's waste reduction policy?

If Yes, what is the new waste reduction policy?

7 .  What resources (staff and/or funds) did the State agency/large State facility commit toward implementing it's Integrated Waste Management Plan in 2001 to help meet the waste diversion goals?

One staff member was designated Recycling Coordinator. His function was more in a reporting capacity than in a promoting capacity. The plan is to better promote our waste diversion program in the future.
