Statewide Transit Planning
Kathleen McClaflin The Statewide Transit Planning Branch works in coordination and partnership with local transit stakeholders, regional transportation planning organizations, transit agencies, and Caltrans district offices to integrate transit into mainstream transportation planning. The Branch is responsible for reviewing and providing input into local and regional transportation planning documents, such as overall work programs (OWP) and regional transportation plans (RTP), system planning documents, and local short and long range transit plans, to make sure transit has been considered as a vital mode choice in the evaluation of transportation projects.
Along with ensuring that transit is incorporated into planning documents, the Branch also encourages the consideration of Transit Oriented Development (TOD). A TOD is a compact, mixed-use development that is within a close proximity to public transportation. This type of development allows a resident to either walk, bike, or take transit for their daily trips. For more information on TODs, access the following site: Transit Oriented Development (TOD). For more information on TODs, access the following site: Transit Oriented Development (TOD).
The Statewide Transit Strategic PlanThe Statewide Transit Planning Branch is embarking on an effort to develop a Statewide Transit Strategic Plan (STSP) in coordination and partnership with the California Transit (CTA) Association and the Californian Association for Coordinated Transportation (CalACT). The STSP will assist with everyday decision making and aid the Department to successfully manage a complex transportation system. The goal is to set a new direction to support public transportation in the future. In order to reach a consensus on a common mission and define achievable goals, the Division of Mass Transportation has organized an expert STSP Advisory Committee, composed of transit agencies and organizations throughout the State. This plan will highlight a sustainable transportation system that supports the outcomes of the California Interregional Blueprint. The Department has employed the University of California, Berkeley and the University of California, Los Angeles to develop and coordinate the STSP. |
