Rolled Erosion Control Product (Netting)

What is This Treatment?
Rolled Erosion Control Product (Netting) is a net produced from 100% coconut (coir) fiber available in three different weights.
When to Use This Treatment?
- Use on excavation (cut) and embankment (fill) slopes between 2:1 and 1:1 (H:V). For specific maximum slope gradients, consult your geotechnical engineer.
- Use of Rolled Erosion Control Product (Netting) in a stream or channel below the 100-year base flood elevation will be determined by the responsible charge Engineer. Planting or incorporation of seed proposed by the Landscape Architect in conjunction with the RECP Netting will be evaluated by the responsible charge Engineer to verify hydraulic impacts of mature vegetation.
Benefits:
- Provides immediate protection from surface erosion.
- Helps retain soil moisture improving seed germination and vegetation establishment.
- Longevity of 3 years (not considering vegetation).
Limitations:
- Rocks and debris may lift blankets above the soil surface, allowing erosion to occur between the blanket and the soil surface.
-
Surface treatment only - unlikely to improve compacted, nutrient depleted, or poorly draining soils as necessary to ensure vigorous long term vegetative cover.
Selecting a Rolled Erosion Control (Netting) Product
Designers should specify the erosion control netting type required by the project site conditions. The table below provides an overview of the three netting types.

Rolled Erosion Control Product (Netting) (Type A)

Rolled Erosion Control Product (Netting) (Type A) has a high open area percentage so seed may be applied before or after the netting is put in place.
Key attributes of this product include:
- Seeding: Hydroseed before or after netting installation.
- Open Area: 65%
- Weight: 3 lbs/sf (11.8 oz/sq yd) (400 grams/sq. meter).
- Slopes: Up to 3:1
Rolled Erosion Control Product (Netting) (Type B)

The photo above shows Rolled Erosion Control Product (Netting)(Type B) installed as part of a meadow restoration project. . This product has a moderate open area, while seed may be applied after the netting is put in place, you will tend to get better germination if the seed is applied to the soil first, and then the netting is placed on top.
- Seeding: Hydroseed before or after netting installation.
- Open Area: 50%
- Weight: 4.46 lbs/sf (20.6 oz/sq yd) (700 grams/sq. meter).
- Slopes: Up to 1:1
Rolled Erosion Control Product (Netting) (Type C)

The photo above shows Rolled Erosion Control Product (Netting) (Type C) installed as part of a meadow restoration project. This is a heavy-weight product, with a very small open area percentage. Seed applied on top of this product has difficulty reaching the soil to germinate. Seed applied before this product in placed, has a difficult time emerging through the small openings.
- Seeding: Hydroseed before netting installation. Material is too dense for effective seeding after netting installation.
- Open Area: 39%
- Material: Heavy weave 100% spun coir geotextile fabric.
- Weight: 4.6 lbs/sf (26.6 oz/sq yd) (900 grams/sq. meter).
- Slopes: Up to 1:1
Specification:
- 2010 Standard Specifications (See Section 21-1.02O(3) Netting and 21-1.03 Rolled Erosion Control Products)
