City of Madera Improvement Project

Ellis Street Bridge Overcrossing Project

The new bridge will span over Golden State Boulevard, State Route 99, Union Pacific Railroad (UPRR) and Sharon Avenue within the City of Madera in Madera County. Construction of the Ellis Street Bridge Overcrossing began in August 2011 and is scheduled for completion in July 2012.

The contractor will begin setting up bridge falsework the week of January 30, 2012.  The setting of falsework will start at Golden State and proceed east to Sharon.  It will be necessary to first close southbound State Route (SR) 99 lanes and detour traffic starting at the Avenue 17 off-ramp.  Traffic will proceed west to Road 23, south to Cleveland Avenue and east to the southbound on-ramp at SR 99.  (See Detour Map) Motorists are advised to allow additional time for their commute or use an alternate route if possible.  The designated detours for northbound and southbound traffic may add an additional 20-30 minutes to motorists commute times.  (Schedule subject to change due to unforeseen circumstances or weather permitting).

When falsework is completed over the SR 99 southbound lanes, the contractor will proceed to install falsework over the SR 99 northbound lanes.  The closure of northbound SR 99 will detour traffic from the Cleveland Avenue off-ramp west to Road 23, then north to Avenue 17 and east along Avenue 17 to the northbound on-ramp at SR 99.  (See Detour map)

The closures will continue to occur from January 30, 2012 through May 30, 2012, as construction requires.  The closures are required to allow for the installation of falsework, setting of bridge forms, placing of concrete, stripping of forms and removal of falsework.  All bridge work over SR 99 will be done at night from 9:00 PM to 5:00 AM, Monday through Thursday.

The exact date and time for closures will be posted on Changeable Message Signs (CMS) posted along Highway 99 and at affected ramps.

In order to implement safety, CHP will place patrol units at various locations on the detour, traffic signals along Cleveland Avenue will be set on flashing red and flagmen will be placed at intersections.  Highway traffic will have priority over local traffic.

If you have questions, please contact Jerry Martinez, Project Resident Engineer, City of Madera Engineering Department at (559) 661-5418.
