'My Office is in the Middle of the Road'

What: Caltrans Safety News Conference—Good visual, photo opportunity
When: Wednesday, January 24, 2001, 11:30 AM
Where: Caltrans Maintenance Yard, 10130 Bubb Road, Cupertino

This past week, two Caltrans workers were seriously injured while performing routine landscape maintenance along Interstate 280 in Santa Clara County. Although the regular, stringent safety measures were in place, they were not enough to protect the workers from an errant driver. That driver is now being investigated for possible DUI.

Tomorrow, January 24, Caltrans will hold a news conference at its Cupertino Maintenance Yard. We will discuss the dangers faced on a daily basis by highway workers, and the importance of careful, considerate, and alert driving on the part of motorists while in construction and maintenance zones.

To illustrate the point, an office desk will be placed in a closed lane of a frontage road near the entrance of the Cupertino Yard. The standard safety precautions will be placed around the desk. News crews will be invited to sit at the desk, and experience first-hand the feeling of working while traffic speeds by.

Also on hand will be representatives of Caltrans, the California Highway Patrol, and the California Conservation Corps.
