The FasTrak electronic toll collection system at the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge will add a mixed-use lane tomorrow morning, the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) has announced.

FasTrak will be installed in lane #20 on the far right side in the ‘mini-toll plaza’ on Wednesday, Feb. 28 at 5 am. This will accommodate I-880 traffic heading to Bay Bridge. On Thursday, March 1, lane #19 will also open as a mixed-use FasTrak lane.  Then in April, two lanes on the left-hand side of the toll plaza will be equipped with FasTrak to serve commuters traveling from westbound I-580.

The existing mixed-use FasTrak toll lane #5 at the San Mateo-Hayward Bridge will become exclusively FasTrak the week of March 12. In addition, all toll lanes at the bridge are being equipped with FasTrak and are scheduled to be open as mixed-use lanes at the same time.

Caltrans plans to install FasTrak in all toll lanes on all toll bridges by the end of the year.

So far, over 100,000 transponders have been issued by Caltrans with new applications averaging 5,000 per week.
