Diseased Tree Removal and Pruning
Alameda, Contra Costa, San Francisco, and Santa Clara Counties

In the summer of 2007, Caltrans will begin construction on a diseased tree removal and pruning project spanning four counties: Alameda, Contra Costa, San Francisco and Santa Clara. Caltrans' primary goal for this project is to maximize safety along the roadside by reducing exposure of the public and maintenance personnel, to falling trees and limbs, as well as reducing potential costs to property damage.

This diseased tree project will consist of the removal of roughly 1,020 trees and the pruning of an additional 425 throughout the four counties. The majority of these trees being addressed by this project include Eucalyptus, Monterey Pine, and Acacia species. Most of these trees are infected with various diseases, most notably Pine Pitch Canker and Lerp Psyllid, that have left the trees dead, dying, and/or structurally unstable. Not only will removal of these diseased trees improve roadside safety, but we will also be minimizing the spread of the various diseases.

In some cases, trees displaying structural defects, such as cracks or weakened limb connections, will be either be pruned or completely removed, depending on the overall health and viability of the tree.

All trees scheduled for removal or pruning were individually evaluated by a certified and registered consulting arborist working independently of Caltrans.
