8/8/14 - Marina Boulevard Northbound Closure and Detour Tuesday Evening April 8th 10 p.m. until April 11th 5 a.m.

ALAMEDA COUNTY – The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) will perform a traffic switch at Marina Blvd on to the new Marina Bridge in the city of San Leandro.

To ensure public safety during the work, the northbound I-880 Marina on-ramp will be closed from Tuesday April 8th 10 p.m. to Friday April 11th at 5 a.m. Westbound Marina Blvd will be temporarily reduced to one lane during these hours as well. Once completed the new bridge will be a total of four lanes (two lanes in each direction). This configuration will remain until the second half of the new bridge is constructed.

The closures are necessary to allow contractors adequate time to realign Marina Boulevard onto the newly constructed bridge. Motorists should expect delays in the area and are advised to use alternate routes during the closure period.

Upon reopening at 5 a.m. on Friday morning April 11th, the northbound I-880 off-ramp will also be realigned. Signs and Portable Changeable Message Signs will be deployed to help motorists.

No lanes will be closed on I-880 during daytime hours.

Detour information:

Continue west on Marina Boulevard, make a right on Merced Street Make a left on Williams street then a right on W. Gate Parkway W. Project Description

The project will widen the southbound I-880 mainline from Hegenberger Road to Marina Boulevard for a High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) lane and will reconstruct the Davis Street and Marina Boulevard overcrossings to accommodate the HOV lane and provide standard vertical clearance over the freeway. The project will extend the start of the southbound HOV lane to the north by approximately three miles; construction includes widening of the bridge over the Union Pacific Railroad (UPRR) and San Leandro Creek. Approximately 3,000 feet of soundwall will also be reconstructed. The project will be built under two separate construction contracts, both of which will be administered by Caltrans. The north segment of the project extends from Hegenberger Road to just north of Davis Street. The south segment extends from Davis Street to Marina Boulevard.

Project Benefits

This project will reduce recurrent southbound congestion and delay during peak periods by improving highway service to carpool and transit riders, decrease commute times for all riders, enhance safety, and encourage ridesharing and the use of transit. Reconstructing the Marina Blvd and Davis St Interchanges will improve vertical clearance on Interstate 880 and reduce the frequency of big rigs with high loads hitting the bridges.

Project Schedule

Construction for the north segment from Hegenberger Road to just north of Davis Street will begin in late January 2013 and is expected to be complete by spring 2015.
Construction for south segment from Davis Street to Marina Boulevard will begin in late January 2013 and is expected to be complete by spring 2016.
