4/24/14 - Marina Boulevard Demolition and Full Freeway Closure

ALAMEDA, CA – The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) will begin demolition work on the Marina Boulevard bridge. The demolition work will start as early as April 23rd and continue up until as late as May 9th.

The majority of the work will be performed at night with lane closures on I-880. Lane closures and full freeway closures will be in both the northbound 880 and southbound 880 directions. Full freeway closures will be in one direction only each night. The typical lane closure hours are 9:00 PM – 5:00 AM on weeknights and 10:00PM - 8:00 AM on weekend nights. Demolition may occur between any of the above mentioned hours.

Full Freeway Closure Hours:
 Northbound 880:

  • Weeknights 12:01 AM - 4:00 AM,
  • 12:01 AM - 5:00 AM on Friday night/Saturday morning
  • 1:00AM - 7:00AM on Saturday night/Sunday morning.

Southbound 880:

  • Weeknights 11:00PM-4:00AM
  • 12:01AM-6:00AM on Friday night/Saturday morning.
  • 1:00AM-7:00AM on Saturday night/Sunday morning.

The detours will take all freeway traffic off I-880 at Marina Boulevard off-ramp and direct them across Marina Boulevard onto the on-ramp.

During demolition residents are expected to have increased levels of noise. Motorists should expect delays during full freeway closure hours and are advised to use alternative routes if possible.

Caltrans appreciates your patience as we work to improve the highways. Please remember to “Slow for the Cone Zone.”

Project Description

The project will widen the southbound I-880 mainline from Hegenberger Road to Marina Boulevard for a High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) lane and will reconstruct the Davis Street and Marina Boulevard overcrossings to accommodate the HOV lane and provide standard vertical clearance over the freeway. The project will extend the start of the southbound HOV lane to the north by approximately three miles; construction includes widening of the bridge over the Union Pacific Railroad (UPRR) and San Leandro Creek. Approximately 3,000 feet of soundwall will also be reconstructed. The project will be built under two separate construction contracts, both of which will be administered by Caltrans. The north segment of the project extends from Hegenberger Road to just north of Davis Street. The south segment extends from Davis Street to Marina Boulevard.

Project Benefits

This project will reduce recurrent southbound congestion and delay during peak periods by improving highway service to carpool and transit riders, decrease commute times for all riders, enhance safety, and encourage ridesharing and the use of transit. Reconstructing the Marina Blvd and Davis St Interchanges will improve vertical clearance on Interstate 880 and reduce the frequency of big rigs with high loads hitting the bridges.

Project Schedule

Construction for the north segment from Hegenberger Road to just north of Davis Street will begin in late January 2013 and is expected to be complete by spring 2015.
Construction for south segment from Davis Street to Marina Boulevard will begin in late January 2013 and is expected to be complete by spring 2016.

$83.4 million
