8/4/13 - FULL FREEWAY NIGHT CLOSURES SCHEDULED ON N/B AND S/B LANES OF I-880 AT MARINA BLVD - MONDAY, AUG. 5 & TUESDAY, AUG. 6

ALAMEDA COUNTY – Caltrans will conduct full night closures along the southbound and northbound lanes of Interstate 880 (I-880) at Marina Boulevard to safely conduct first-stage construction of the new bridge along Marina Blvd., in the City of San Leandro.

The first night closure is scheduled for Monday, August 5th, from 11:00 p.m. to 4 a.m. All lanes along s/b I-880 at Marina Blvd. will be closed. The second will take place on Tuesday, Aug. 6th. All northbound lanes along I-880 at Marina Blvd. will be closed from 11 p.m. to 4 a.m.

Detour information:

For both closures, freeway traffic will be detoured at Marina Blvd. off ramp, and directed right back onto the freeway at Marina Blvd. on ramp. Flaggers will be posted at the construction zone to assist motorists detouring on and off the freeway. Marina Blvd. will be closed to through traffic passing over I-880. Expect minor delays as motorists are safely directed through the construction zone.

Caltrans appreciates your patience as we work to improve the highways. Please remember to “Slow for the Cone Zone.”

Project Description

The project will widen the southbound I-880 mainline from Hegenberger Road to Marina Boulevard for a High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) lane and will reconstruct the Davis Street and Marina Boulevard overcrossings to accommodate the HOV lane and provide standard vertical clearance over the freeway. The project will extend the start of the southbound HOV lane to the north by approximately three miles; construction includes widening of the bridge over the Union Pacific Railroad (UPRR) and San Leandro Creek. Approximately 3,000 feet of soundwall will also be reconstructed. The project will be built under two separate construction contracts, both of which will be administered by Caltrans. The north segment of the project extends from Hegenberger Road to just north of Davis Street. The south segment extends from Davis Street to Marina Boulevard.

Project Benefits

This project will reduce recurrent southbound congestion and delay during peak periods by improving highway service to carpool and transit riders, decrease commute times for all riders, enhance safety, and encourage ridesharing and the use of transit. Reconstructing the Marina Blvd and Davis St Interchanges will improve vertical clearance on Interstate 880 and reduce the frequency of big rigs with high loads hitting the bridges.

Project Schedule

Construction for the north segment from Hegenberger Road to just north of Davis Street will begin in late January 2013 and is expected to be complete by spring 2015.
Construction for south segment from Davis Street to Marina Boulevard will begin in late January 2013 and is expected to be complete by spring 2016.
