The paving was completed on September 1, 2009. Traffic sensors are now being reinstalled, and should be completed by September 7. All work is expected to finish by September 11, 2009.

May-July, 2009

Starting on July 6, 2009, Caltrans will start a new project that will resurface State Highway 131, also known as Tiburon Boulevard, in Marin County. The project is expected to last until early September.

The work will extend from the Highway 101/131 interchange in Mill Valley to Mar West Street in Tiburon. Crews will grind and fill several deteriorating sections of the highway, and place a new coat of asphalt over the entire highway.

In order to minimize the inconvenience, the work will be done at night. Some of the work will be unavoidably noisy. However, the loudest work will only be done during the earlier hours.

131 photos The work will require some lanes to be closed. From the 101/131 interchange to Blackies Pasture Road, the highway has four lanes. Only one lane will have to be closed. However, from Blackies Road to Mar West Street, the highway has only two lanes. With one lane closed, one-way traffic control will be necessary.

In addition to the roadway resurfacing, this project will also rebuild several sections of shoulder that are either deteriorating or missing. The new shoulders will provide an extra margin of safety for drivers.

The new asphalt overlay will be “rubberized asphalt,” which makes use of recycled tires. About 1800 tons of tires that otherwise would be sent to landfills will instead become part of the new pavement.
