101 Auxiliary Lane Project (University Avenue to Embarcadero Road)
This project will add auxiliary lanes in each direction on U.S. Route 101 from the University Avenue Overcrossing in Palo Alto (San Mateo County) to Embarcadero Road in Santa Clara County as well as other improvements. The existing four-lane highway runs through the cities of Palo Alto and Menlo Park. The project will upgrade the existing roadway with additional auxiliary lanes and standard shoulders.
Auxiliary lanes extend from on-ramps to off-ramp, but do not go through the interchanges. The majority of the construction will occur on the freeway side of the existing sound walls.
Construction started June, 2012 and is expected to be completed by fall, 2012. Plant establishment will continue through fall 2013.
The project limits are the second phase of this widening project. The first phase was completed in June, 2012 from Marsh Road to University Avenue. (San Mateo County)
This $8 million dollar project is jointly funded by the Federal Government, the State of California and by the San Mateo County Transportation Authority. The prime contractor is Granite Construction.
The U.S 101 Auxiliary lane Project will alleviate existing and projected traffic congestion and improve safety.
