PARK-N-RIDE Program

 

Park and Ride lots located throughout District 3 provide a safe and convenient “transfer location” from single passenger vehicles to multi passenger vehicles. There are “formal” lots with officially recognized and improved locations, or “informal” and unimproved lots where commuters have found convenient and safe locations to carpool, vanpool or catch the bus. The general purpose of Park and Ride Lots is to promote ridesharing in lieu of single occupant vehicle travel, including use of public transit, carpools, and vanpools. Lot Essentials and Amenities

  • Informal Lot: Where commuters have found convenient and safe locations to carpool, vanpool or catch the bus.

  • Formal Lot: Officially recognized and improved locations to carpool, vanpool or catch the bus.

  • State Owned: A lot located on State Right of Way, usually adjacent to a State Route or major route.

  • Private Owned: A lot owned by a private entity (church, restaurant, shopping mall) allowing Park and Ride activities. Caltrans can establish Maintenance Agreements with private entities.

  • City or County Owned: A lot owned and operated, but not always maintained, by a city or county. An agreement, usually a Maintenance Agreement, establishes who is responsible for maintenance of the lot. It is not unusual for Caltrans to maintain lots owned by other entities.

Location: A Park and Ride lot on a major route should be close to, and downstream of, major residential areas. It should also be upstream of employment areas and traffic congestion. Easy access to High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) lanes, bus/transit connections, and pedestrian/bicycle facilities, are important for a successful Park and Ride lot.

Access: Easy and safe entries and exits connected to major routes are needed in a Park and Ride lot for pedestrians, bikes, single cars, carpools, vanpools, and transit connections.

Multi-Modal Potential: Safe sidewalks, pedestrian crossings, bike lockers, and transit accommodations (bus pullouts and rider shelters) are also essential for a successful Park and Ride lot.

Visibility: A Park and Ride lot needs to be easily seen from the surrounding areas and nearby access routes. Lot users need to see if spaces are open, and if they are interested in parking at a particular lot. Vandalism decreases, and security and lot usage increases, when a lot is reasonably open and visible.

Security - Park & Ride lots are for commuter parking and are not available for residential, commercial, long-term parking, or for recreational use. Please park only in designated areas in Park & Ride lots. Parking in non-designated areas is at your own risk and could result in your vehicle being towed. While local law enforcement staff check Park & Ride lots regularly, there is not generally full-time security at these facilities. Park & Ride patrons are encouraged to lock cars, not leave valuables in sight and report suspicious activity at transit facilities or on buses to the police or to bus drivers.
