Red Hill Avnue Overcrossing at Interstate 405
The Department of Transportation (Caltrans) has begun an Embankment Stabilization Project at Interstate 405 and Red Hill Avenue Overcrossing, southbound and northbound within the cities of Irvine and Costa Mesa. This $9.5 million project will remove, replace, and reconstruct the existing roadbed structure. The movement of Mechanically Stabilized Earth (MSE) Walls and underlying embankment have triggered progressive pavement cracks on the roadway above. The Embankment Stabilization Project has 330 working days with actual construction starting January 2016 and completion by mid/late 2017. The Funding Source is the State Highway Operation and Protection Program(SHOPP). Ortiz Construction is the contractor.
Traffic Handling/Planned Closures
During initial construction activity partial/full closures are planned on Red Hill Avenue, and the south SR-55 to south I-405 connector, and the south transition lane to John Wayne Airport to install crash cushions. Red Hill Avenue will be reduced from 2 lanes to 1 lane in each direction during the duration of the project with the possibility of intermittent overnight closures.
A 4-month full closure of Red Hill Avenue will occur midway through construction, during late spring to early fall of 2016. The exact dates have yet to be determined. Caltrans will provide information to the public in advance of the construction and any planned roadway closures.

This project will remove the existing Mechanically Stabilized Earth (MSE) Walls, reinforce the underlying soil embankment, as well as construct new retaining walls that will provide a safe enhancement to the local arterial surface street system.
