Westbound I-8 Reduced to One Lane Near State Border Beginning Monday
EL CENTRO, Calif. –– A seven-mile portion of westbound Interstate 8 (I-8) from just east of State Route 186 to just west of 4th Avenue in Winterhaven near the Arizona border will be reduced to one lane beginning Monday morning at 7. The work is part of Segment three of the Caltrans I-8 Update Project in Imperial County.
Crews have begun placing concrete barriers for pavement work on the roadway shoulders and crossings in preparation for future traffic shifts. Traffic will eventually be reduced to one lane in each direction and be shifted to the same side of the I-8 during various phases of the project.
The $417 million project will reconstruct 48 miles of traffic lanes and shoulders from the vicinity of State Route 7 near El Centro to the Arizona border. The I-8 Update is a five-segment project that will extend the life of the pavement and provide motorists with a smoother ride. Crews will use steel reinforcing bars placed within the concrete along the entire length of the pavement for greater strength and durability. The first three segments began this year and will be completed in 2018. The remaining two segments will start in early 2017 and finish in 2019.
Construction may cause significant delays as motorists travel between California and Arizona. Motorists traveling in Imperial County east of State Route 111 in El Centro are urged to plan ahead and visit the Caltrans website.Visit www.dot.ca.gov/dist11/ or CaltransDistrict11 on Facebook to keep current on transportation information including planned closures and major traffic incidents on state highways in San Diego and Imperial counties.
