Cabrillo Bridge/Laurel Street Overcrossing Closed to Vehicles Beginning in January

SAN DIEGO – Caltrans reminds motorists that Laurel Street leading into the west side of Balboa Park will be closed to vehicles January-April.  Laurel Street is the top deck for the historic Cabrillo Bridge and is included in the Bridge Retrofit and Rehabilitation Project that started construction last fall and is expected to be completed next summer.

During the closure, a narrow walk path will be provided on one side of Laurel Street for pedestrians and bicyclists who walk their bikes.  All business in the park will remain open during their normal hours.

Caltrans will also occasionally implement late night lane closures along SR-163.  Notices for both traffic control efforts will be placed on routes leading to the work site well in advance of any closure.

The $38 million rehabilitation and retrofit project will bring the bridge up to current earthquake safety standards and will include repaving along the roadway leading into Balboa Park.  The improvement plan ensures that the historic bridge structure and surrounding areas are protected as the work progress.  The project is expected to be completed well ahead of The Balboa Park 2015 Centennial Celebration.
