Ramp Meter Activation on Southbound I-805 at Sweetwater Road and Bonita Road
SAN DIEGO – The southbound Interstate 805 (I-805) on-ramps at Sweetwater and Bonita roads will be metered during the evening commute from 3 to 7 beginning Wednesday, Aug. 31, according to the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans). The ramps will be metered for two vehicles to proceed at the green signal for both the regular use lane and the High Occupancy Vehicle lane.
Signs will be placed the week of Aug. 22 notifying motorists of the upcoming meter activation. On Tuesday, Aug. 30 the green light at the meter will be turned on to alert motorists to the meter location.
Traffic volumes on I-805 in the South Bay area have been rising and ramp meters are being activated as a proactive tool to avoid congestion. The ramp meters are part of the strategy implemented with the recent opening of auxiliary lanes on southbound I-805.
Ramp meters keep large volumes of vehicles from entering the freeway all at once and pushing it past its designed capacity. Motorists are delayed for a brief time at the meter, but studies show that freeway speeds, overall travel times and highway safety are improved.
