Changeable Message Signs – Displayed Travel Times
SAN DIEGO – Freeway Changeable Message Signs hours of operations will be changed to display travel-times during peak commute hours, from 5 to 10 am and 2 to 7 pm weekdays beginning June 22, 2009, according to the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans).
Travel-time postings on freeway Changeable Message Signs will be changed from the current display time of 4:00 am to 8:00 pm to separate display times during peak hours. This change is in keeping with the Departments proactive steps to increase energy savings and reduce costs.
The estimated travel-time displays help commuters gauge traffic congestion to their destination in an effort to determine if an alternate route would save time. Travel-time displays will be pre-empted for emergency traveler information related to freeway collisions and blockage, and Amber Alert notifications of child abductions.
