Work Begins Tonight on Interstate 5 Bridge Over Oceanside Boulevard
SAN DIEGO –
The reconstruction of the Interstate 5 bridge over Oceanside Boulevard planned for mid-summer will actually start work tonight, according to the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans).
Caltrans District Director Pedro Orso-Delgado said an expedited contract calls for the work to take place weekdays from 9 p.m.-5 a.m. and continue for about the next six weeks. There will be periodic closures during the course of work on both the freeway lanes and Oceanside Boulevard, but minimal traffic delays are expected.
The project was expedited in response to concerns regarding concrete spalling. Orso-Delgado credited the Department’s excellent working relationship with the North County Transit District for helping keep the project on track.
He said workers have already stabilized and patched portions of the bridge over Oceanside Boulevard.
Penhall Co. is reconstructing a portion of the bridge that was widened in 1963. The project cost is estimated at $500,000.
