New Auxiliary Lane Opens on SR-52
SAN DIEGO – The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) and the San Diego Association of Governments (SANDAG) on Monday will open the newly-constructed State Route 52 auxiliary lane between Interstate 15 and Mast Boulevard.
The new lane is part of the $255 million SR-52 Sunny Side Gateway Project, which also features freeway improvements through the city of Santee from SR-125 east to SR-67 (see the project fact sheet at http://www.dot.ca.gov/dist11/facts/SR-52brochure.pdf). The entire project is set for completion late next year.
“This auxiliary lane promises to smooth the way for truck traffic and help ease congestion for East County commuters,” said Santee City Councilman and SANDAG Transportation Committee Chairman Jack Dale. “The TransNet half-cent sales tax provides key funding for this important regional transportation improvement.”
The SR-52 Sunny Side Gateway Project contains a variety of federal, state and local funding sources, including $133 million from the state’s Proposition 1B Transportation Bond Fund and $55 million from TransNet.
“It’s safe to say that without Prop. 1B and TransNet, this project and other transportation improvements throughout the region would not be on the construction horizon,” said Caltrans District Director Bob Pieplow.
