Interstate 805 Ramp Meters To Be Activated
SAN DIEGO – Ramp meters will be activated at five locations along Interstate 805 in the South Bay area beginning with the E Street/Bonita Road on-ramp to northbound I-805 on Wednesday, Aug. 12, according to the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans).
“The meters will be activated in stages with the new locations coming on line at a rate of about one per week,” said Deputy District Director Traffic Operations Joe Hull. “We want to allow motorists time to adapt to the changes.”
In addition to E Street/Bonita Road, the locations – in the order in which they will be activated – are H Street, L Street/Telegraph Canyon Road, Orange Avenue/Olympic Parkway and Main Street.
The new meters will operate Monday through Friday mornings, excluding some holidays, during the peak commute from 5:30 to 9:30.
Signs will be posted in advance and changeable message signs will be placed to alert motorists of the newly activated ramp meters.
The ramp metering system controls more than 280 freeway on-ramps in San Diego County, allowing traffic to enter at a rate dependent on current traffic conditions. Motorists are often delayed at the meter, but freeway speeds, overall travel times and highway safety are improved.
