Does the contractor drill holes for new concrete footing?

• Yes, drilling is an acceptable method.

How deep is the hole or how much of the footing stays above ground?

• As shown on Plan Sheet C-1 (2 of 10).

Who welds the existing sign to the new support? 

• The existing sign is not welded to the new support. 

We need the difference in the Sign sizes, between G84, G84A, W58, and SPCL.  So you can price the post lengths.

• The overall dimension of 1320 mm should actually be 1209 mm + 15 mm crown (see side dimensions on C-1; sheet 2 of 10), and the drain pipe measurement of 457 mm did not include the 5 mm for the top plate which totals 462 mm. Therefore 1224 - 760 = 464 mm which leaves an additional 2 mm unaccounted for which is the allowable tolerance. 

"Sign posts wedges shall be strong and impervious to weather."
Would douglas fir wedges satisfy the above requirement? If not, please provide example that would.

The term of 40 days is too short.  It will take 40 days just to manufacture the concrete cylinders.  The contract working days should be increased to 90 days to accommodate submittal, inspection, manufacturing, and installation.

Are the K-1 markers considered part of the State supplied sign panel materials noted on page 25 of the Special Provisions?

• No, see addendum 2 with revision to Section 10-1.15 "SIGN POST SUPPORT SYSTEM" they are included in the item price.

When I purchase the plastic blocks for the wedge, am I able to use them as supplied by the distributor listed? 

• No, the blocks are a standard size of 150 mm X 675 mm blocks. The blocks must then be cut to the dimensions and reasonable tolerances as shown for the two different sizes required on the CONSTRUCTION DETAIL C-2 (sheet 3 of 10). All work involved in shaping the blocks to the correct size as shown on the plans shall be included in the item price.

The addenda states that sign posts shall be reset in the dirt area. Will this be the location for all sign post support systems?

• The location is dependent on the 7 M wide point between the two shoulders, if that point is not dirt then consider it a differing site condition. 

What is the method of payment for backfill and asphalt patching where existing sign posts are removed?

• Backfill is included in the contract price, assume removal and replacement in dirt, anything different shall be considered a differing site condition.

Is concrete painted with lamp black an acceptable method for patching?

• No.

The Plan Details appear to size the post cavity for 4"x4" wood post.
Most existing roadside signs are 6"x4" wood post.  Please provide detail for
actual posts.

• Addendum # 2 shows the cavity as 4" X 6" therefor assume a standard dimension for all locations. 

The New 5th Paragraph, Part 1, defines the vinyl composite block as being "150MM x 675MM block. "The Plan Details shown on Sheet 3 call for a set of detailed, tapered wedges.  Is it the intent of your
specifications that the Contractor produce the detailed wedges from your vendors "block" of vinyl?

• Yes, the contractor will be required to produce the wedges to the dimensions with reasonable tolerances allowed as show on C-2 CONSTRUCTION DETAIL (sheet 3 of 10). The distributor price is only for the standard size block 150 mm X 675 mm.

What is the purpose of "ferrule loop inserts?"   Please provide detail for welding to rebar hoops?

• The ferrule loop inserts are for lifting the sign support system for placement at the designated locations. 
• "MATERIALS INFORMATION" 

 Your intent per Sect. 10-1.15 appears to call for a welded steel cavity form.  No welding requirements are shown on plans.

• The steel cavity form does not have specific welding requirements it is used as a form and removed before for the support system. See "Materials Information". 

Please confirm that a welded cavity form is required at each of the 221 Sign Support Structures of Bid Item 4.

• No, it is not required for each support system.

Please confirm that all 221 welded steel cavity forms are to be galvanized after fabrication per Section 75-1.02.

• The forms should be galvanized per Section 75-1.02 but it is only necessary to make form 1- 221 forms per your manufacturing process.

Clarify, as plans only call for "gravel fill."

• The intent of the gravel "fill" bag is to separate any fines from the area. 

At Contractors option, can the sign post support be cast-in-place?

• No.

The 40 work day project completion appears too short to allow for preparation, submittal, review, approval and implementation of the Lead Compliance Plan required by Section 10-1.01.  Request that working days be increased to reasonable time to comply with Section 10-1.01.

• Bid it as stated in the Specials. 

No Special Provisions have been provided for definition of reinforcing steel shown on Plan Sheet 2.

• Bid it as you see it, any changes will be in accordance with Section 4-1.03.

Addendum #2 defined unit price compensation to include most of the support system components, but does not define reinforcing steel.  Please clarify.

• The reinforcing steel shall be included in the contract unit price for Item 4: SIGN SUPPORT SYSTEM.

The pricing table of unit prices is unclear if these are for an individual wedge or set of wedges or the "raw" 150MM x 675MM block.  Your designated vendor has not yet clarified this.  Please clarify.
