Caltrans District 11 Construction Department has developed this method of answering Bidders Inquiries to better serve the needs of the Contractors who bid on our Projects.

The BIDDER'S INQUIRIES & RESPONSES will be updated continuously with the last posting no later than 15:00 on Wednesday prior to the bid opening.

Caltrans District 11 Construction Department will post all of the questions submitted by any of the registered Planholders for that Contract, but reserves the right not to answer any questions deemed unsatisfactory for public viewing.

Plan Sheet / Specification Reference= Section 10-1.18 PREPARE AND PAINT CURB, Item #22 PREPARE AND PAINT CURB

This spec. is not typical for traffic painting both for paint requirements & possibly for preparation. Possible "LEAD" in existing paint.

Bid as shown in the Plans and Special Provisions. 
Any costs for modified preparation methods due to existing hazardous materials is not included in the contract.

Various stations of the plans require cold planing the existing asphalt pavement various depths up to 175mm.  Additionally, the plans call for the 60mm overlay to maintain a two percent fall from crown to gutter.  Is Caltrans going to provide grade controls for the cold planing and / or overlay to maintain the required two percent fall?

Yes, the State will provide grade controls.

Should the contractor choose to complete the cold planing and overlay concurrent with the additional 60-92mm replace AC item, will the contractor be held to the asphalt cooling specifications between lifts?

Is Caltrans aware the pcc gutters will be scratched or marred by the cold planing of the existing asphalt overlay in the pcc gutter areas?  Will Caltrans accept the scratches and marred pcc without requiring additional work or replacement?

In accordance with Section 7-1.11 PRESERVATION OF PROPERTY of the Standard Specifications, due care shall be exercised to avoid damage to the existing pcc gutters. The required removal methods could possibly cause some marring or scratches in the existing pcc gutter but if there is extensive damage due to the contractor not taking appropriate care then replacement or restoration will be required at the contractors expense.

The areas of AC/ PCC removal on the intersecting streets on the westerly side indicate that the existing is to be replaced with 300 MM RAC-G. These areas are to be paid as Item #12 per sheet Q-1. Is it Caltrans' intent to pay RAC-G at the same rate as Type A conventional?

The tonnage for Rubberized Asphalt Concrete on the quantity sheet appears to have been arrived at in error. It looks as though the 175 MM grind quantity was carried over to the pavement quantities, overstating the tonnage substantially. Can you verify that this is correct?
