  Q:09/12/11
R:09/19/11

Plan Sheet / Specification Reference= Bid item #94, sheet No. 289: Precast prestressed concrete girder

Question= Sheet No. 289 shows precast girder depth as 4'-5". Caltrans standard bulb-tee girder section nearest to this size is 4'-7" deep (1400mm). Please confirm that 4'-7" deep BT girder is acceptable.
  • The girder depth is 4' 5". 4'7" girder depth is not acceptable. Please bid per the current contract bid documents.

R:10/06/11

Plan Sheet / Specification Reference= Item # 94, Precast prestressed concrete bulb-tee girders. Plan sheet # 289.

Question= Regarding the response to question #1: With respect, if the Engineer wishes to deviate from a Caltrans standard girder size by 2", then please consider making the depth reduction in the top and/or bottom flange thickness, instead of the web. Precasters in this state have invested in steel forms for the manufacture of Caltrans bulb-tee girders. You cannot take 2" out of the web of a steel form. A completely new steel form will be needed for a 4'-5" deep girder, adding tens of thousands of dollars (public money) to the cost of this job. A budget-conscious state government should seriously consider the cost-effectiveness of design decisions. Can you please either reduce the flange thicknesses by 2", while keeping the girder depth at 4'-5", or allow the girder to be 4'-7" deep.

  • Thank you for your inquiry. We have investigated your inquiry with the designer of record. For bidding purposes, there will be no changing in the girder configuration.

  Q:09/30/11
R:10/11/11

Plan Sheet / Specification Reference= Sheet 73 & 74. Joint Overhead Utility.

Question= Regarding the location of the Joint Overhead Utility (SDGE 12kv and Fiber Optics) to the east of the bridge, is there a plan to de-energize this line for any period during construction? The current location would severely hampers several operations.

  • Currently, Caltrans has no plans to de-energize the utility lines recently located east of the bridge.  The location of the relocated lines was carefully planned during the design stage to not impact the construction activities.  Please see addendum 1 above for the utility relocation plans.

  Q:10/25/11
R:10/26/11

Plan Sheet / Specification Reference= Item 76 Asphalt Emulsion (Fog Seal Coat), plan sheets 2 and 153

Question= Plan Sheet 2, Note 5 states Fog Seal must be applied to all HMA surfaces EXCEPT traveled ways and detours.
Plan sheet 153, summary of quantities for HMA indicates Fog Seal quantities associated with structural sections that are traveled ways, example 5th line down, "WS" Line, structural section 1, which is the WS Ramp traveled way, indicates a quantity of 0.3 ton for fog seal. Clarify whether the traveled ways with an associated fog seal qty on sheet 153 are to receive fog seal or is note on sheet 2 correct and the traveled ways are not to receive fog seal.

  • Fog seal coat must be applied to all HMA surfaces except travelled way and detours. Please bid per the the current contract bid documents..

  Q:11/02/11
R:11/03/11

Plan Sheet / Specification Reference= Item 147 Concrete Barrier Type 60

Question= Ref. Plan Sheet 44 of 306- Concrete Barrier Type 60C ENRA Line Table.- Sta 851+25 to 851+75 have data that will result in total barrier height less than the minimum 36" called for by Standard plan A 76 series, and are in fact less than the 32" shown for Type 60S on Std Plan A 76 H. Will this be corrected before the bid or after via CCO.

  • Please bid per the the current contract bid documents.
