Question= Please provide additional information for top and bottom of concrete walls 507R & 507L. The information requested here is similar to that provided under Contract 11-2T0924 (Wall 246L), Managed Lanes, Segment 2 South.

  • In addition to Plan sheets 734 thru 772, use Typical Cross Section sheet 5, Profile and Superelevation sheets 28, 35, 41 & 43 to obtain top & bottom elevations of Walls 507R & 507L for bidding purposes.

    During Construction, Survey will be performed to field verify exact elevations.

Question= Should all the existing bridge joints be replaced? Legend #6 shows one location where replacement of type B joint seal is required at the existing approach slab. The qtys allowed for bid items 149 & 150 appear to be for only the N & R approach slabs. Does the left bridge and right west bridge require 40mm and the right east require 15mm? How is splicing to existing joints paid?

  • The entire bridge joints will be replaced with Joint Seal (MR 40 MM) at abutments 1 & 3.  Please see the quantity revisions per Addendum #2 dated June 12, 2008.

Special Provisions Sec 10-1.54 The last sentence on this page states, Attention is directed to "Order of Work" of these special provisions reagarding the sequential order of grinding concrete pavement and replacing concrete pavement.

Question= Is there an "order of work" required for these items, replace concrete (RSC) and Grinding?

  • There is no order of work for this Item. The second paragraph is deleted. Please refer to Addendum No. 1.

  • The Bridge Removal descriptions of Special Provisions listed in Section 10-1.34, Bridge Removal,  on page 271 have been revised.  Please see Addendum #2 dated June 12, 2008 for revisions.

Question= Found on sheet number 334 (in the summery of quantities) there is an additional 21.84 M3 of concrete for Bid Item 137 Minor Concrete(Minor Structure). The chart gives nothing more than locations, lengths, and volumes. Is there a detail showing what is to be built at these locations?

  • The Minor Concrete Minor Structure quantity on Q-5 (sheet 334) is for Metal Beam Guard Rail Connection to Concrete Barrier on top of Abutment and Retaining Wall and it is associated with the detail shown on C-13 (sheet 60).

          During Construction, Survey will be performed to field verify exact elevations.

There were some quantity errors regarding the piling quantities that were corrected in Addendum #2 dated June 12, 2008.

Plan Sheet / Specification Reference=Within the Special Provisions page 188 – 7th paragraph “The work shall be performed in conformance with the stages of construction shown on the plans. The contractor may submit a proposal to proceed with work in subsequent stages if the work does not conflict with work in preceding stages. This proposal must include: 1) Revised staging plans 2) Revised schedule, including revised staging showing satisfactory progress is maintained in preceding stages 3) Statement of cost savings. ”

Question=Which of the below interpretations is correct? 1) Will it take written permission from the Engineer to deviate from the depicted staging? 2) a. Requested “proposal” is for information only…any costs or time savings are to be retained by the contractor and be reflected in the bid price. b. A change order/crip will be required for the purpose of revised staging plans. As such the State will seek a credit for the associated savings in time & costs.

  • Approval from the Engineer is required to deviate from the project staging shown on the plans.  A crip is not needed.

Question=This is confusing which duration governs?....the 15th day or the 55th day....

Can not have both?

  • The 1st working day is the 55th day after contract approval. Please refer to Addendum No.1.

  • This is existing overhead electric transmission line 69kV (kilovolts) which is located 8.3m (27') over the freeway I-15.
    The line will remain in place. Electrical pole on the west side of the freeway will be relocated before start of construction from SDGE. (see plan sheet # 162)

Question= 1-This "Final Pay" Item is ambiguous at best. Request that you review the information shown on plans including Roadway sheets 18,21,57,332 and 734,735 of the Structure plans. When your representative(s) look at the information now shown it may be recognized, that Item 221(F), Special Provision Section 10-1.106 and the notes and quantities on the referenced plans are incomplete, contradictory and ambiguous. Will this be corrected before bid date by an addendum to all plan holders or will this portion of the "Complete" Phase I design sequencing information be eliminated and replaced with a real complete design,and alternate compensation, by contract change order?

  • "Concrete Barrier Type 60C Modified" should read "Concrete Barrier Type 60 Mod1" on all applicable plan sheets.
    Post award and approval of the contract a CCO will be issued to change contract item 221 from "Concrete Barrier Type 60C Modified" to "Concrete Barrier Type 60 Mod1"

Question= Please confirm if tieback anchorage caps are required for this job. If required, it should be noted that there may not be enough clearance for 300 mm structural concrete facing to completely encapsulate or cover the anchorage caps.

  • There are no tieback anchor caps required for the tiebacks.  There is adequate concrete coverage over a standard anchorhead wedge plate for the anchor size we expect the contractor to use.

  • The bottom of new footing elevations are shown correctly as elevation 201.900 at abutment 1 and 202.600 at abutment 4.  The CIDH piles should be 75 mm above the bottom of footing as shown on sheet 717.  The bottom of the existing abutment footings are elevation 203.25 plus or minus at abutment 1 and elevation  203.93 plus or minus at abutment 2. abutment 4.

Question= Section LL thorough OO shows double beams welded/strapped together with 25 mm plates @ 600 mm on center. Please clarify vertical extent of the 25 mm metal strapping welde to the beams. Cut height only? Entire beam length?

  • The straps shown in the details mentioned are required only above and below each tieback anchor.  They are not necessary for the entire length of the soldier pile.  The Contractor is responsible for ensuring that the piles are correctly spaced and aligned in the drilled hole prior to encasing the piles with concrete.

Question= This is a typical Type 2 Column Design.  Therefore, otptions to construction.

1. Is an optional C.J. possible at bottom of column cage elevation?

2. Is permanent casing allowed for use of optional C.J.?

3. Which type of casing CMP of smooth wall casings be accaptable?

  • Please bid per the current plans specifications and details.
The use of an optional construction joint may require further analysis and design changes.  There is currently not enough time to investigate and provide these design changes to the project prior to bid opening.

  • The Slope paving concrete pavers shall be tan in color and shall match the referee sample available at the District 11 Office of Landscape Architecture, California Department of Transportation, 4050 Taylor Street, San Diego, California.

Plan Sheet / Specification Reference= B.I. #120, 2.4M CIDH Concrete Piling.  Bent 2. Permanent steel casing.

Question= 1. Can permanent steel pipe at Bent 2, for RR shoring, be oversized (108" or 102")?

2. If CMP is utilized, can it be installed in an oversized drilled hole (typically 2'-0" larger in diameter) if annulus is backfilled with 2-sack sand slurry by tremie placement method?

3. If smooth wall pipe is utilized, can it be vibrated in?

4. Can permanent pipe, @ Bent 2, be installed to a deeper elevation than 189.00 shown on contract plans, at contractors option?

Please bid per the current plans and details.  

1.  The increase in casing size will have to be evaluated by the Design and Geotechnical Engineers for structural capacity.  There is not currently enough time prior to bid opening to analyze this proposed modification.  

2.  Corrugated Metal Pipe is not currently an option for pile casings.

3.  Vibration of permanent steel casing is allowed at the locations listed in the table following the sixth paragraph of section 10-1.59 Piling of the special provisions.

4.  Optional construction joints are not currently allowed on this project.  The contractor may propose the use of an optional construction joint, but it will have to be analyzed by the Design and Geotechnical Project Engineers.
