Plan Sheet / Specification Reference= Dwg. Ref.: 5-D, Special Provisions Section 10-1.38 “Soil Nail Assembly” under the heading “Testing” (Page 275)

Question = Special Provisions Section 10-1.38 “Soil Nail Assembly” under the heading “Testing” (Page 275) provides an equation to determine the test load of the test soil nail assemblies.  The Value Qd (in kN/linear meter) cannot be found in the plans.  Please advise.

Plan Sheet / Specification Reference= Plan Sheet 301 - Summary of Quantities, Earthwork Summary

Question = In the Earthwork Summary table on plan sheet 301, the last item is Miscellaneous Infield Areas with 8,406 m3 embankment and 26,714 m3 excavation.
I am unable to locate Misc Infield Areas on the grading plans.
Please provide the plan sheet numbers showing the locations and contour grading plans for these Misc infield Areas.

The "Miscellaneous Infield Areas" are the following:

  • The area (in cut/fill) enclosed by Magnolia Avenue, Prospect Avenue, SR-67 and the "MSON" line, which includes the detention basin (EDB 47L) - located in plan sheets 88-90 (Contour Grading sheets G-5 through G-7)
  • The area (in fill) west of "EN" line station 281+00 - located in plan sheet no. 89 (Contour Grading sheet G-6)
  • The area (in cut) left of the southbound lanes on SR-67 (underneath the "SW" connector) from stations 40+00 to 41+00 - located in plan sheets 87-88 (Contour Grading sheets G-4 and G-5)
  • The area (in cut) left of the southbound lanes on SR-67 from stations 45+00 to 45+80 - located in plan sheet 90 (Contour Grading sheet G-7)

Question = In the above details, the use of a optional construction joint is shown.  If this construction is utilized, the possibilty of lowering personal into the drilled shaft exist.

Therefore, has underground classifcation notice been performed?

If so, has the site been classified?..and what is it claasified as?

  • Please refer to SHEET-10, LAYOUT, L-1, "NOTE No. 6" which refers to SHEET-54, CONSTRUCTION DETAIL, C-16 for identified "DISEL CONTAMINATED AREAS."  


Plan Sheet / Specification Reference= Diesel Contaminated Areas, Plan Sheet 54 of 688 

Question = What is the depth and quantity of the diesel contaminated material shown on plan sheet 54 of 688?

  • The contract does not provide an exact depth or quantity for the diesel contaminated material.


Plan Sheet / Specification Reference= Bid Item 60(S) Imported Topsoil

Question = In the Summary of Quantities, the Earthwork Summary Chart on sheet 301 lists Imported Topsoil on the ES and NW. I cannot find a plan sheet showing the location and depth of this topsoil. What are the limits and depth of the topsoil?

  • Please refer to Sheet 50 of the plans, CONSTRUCTION DETAILS C-12, for the location and depth of the topsoil.



Plan Sheet / Specification Reference= Specials 10-1.36 Earth Retaining Structures, page 266, second paragraph

Question = The second paragraph on page 266 of the Specials instructs the Contractor to place permeable material within the limits shown on the plans. On plan sheet 592, the limits of backfill do not indictate any permeable backfill.
Is the intent to place permeable at the back of the MSE panels?
If so, how thick is the permeable.

  •    There is no permeable material shown against the MSE Wall on the plan.   


Plan Sheet / Specification Reference= Column Details - Bent 8, Sheet No. 514

Question = Section B-B shows CIDH Pile cage for Bent 8 of the N67-W52 Brdige, and calls for (57) vertical bars. (19) are bundled and (19) are not. My calculations show that in this section, which is for 49'-3" of the upper portion of this pile, your clear spacing between verts. is 2 1/2"!!..This does not meet your 5" X 5" window spacing design for rebar cages, per your 1992 MEMO. Please address. This will lead to restricted concrete flow and result in anomaly readings in the Gamma-Gamma test.

Plan Sheet / Specification Reference= ALL column/pile connections. Sheets 424, 468, 514, 559, & 561.

Question =Optional Constrcution Joints are shown in all your CIDH piles. Typically @ 24'-8" from cut-off. In serveral of your foundation report Memorandums, you state that if this C.J. is utilized, permanent steel casing shall be furnished and installed to a mimimum of 1'-0" below this joint.

Due to ground water and possible cavey 'rock' conditons, it may be necessary to install this steel casing to a much deeper depth. What is the maximum depth the designer will allow this casing to be placed?

Plan Sheet / Specification Reference= Special Provisions Section 4, Page 136

Question = 1) States: "The Contractor may begin work at the job site before the fifty-fifth day after contract approval if …". What is the significance of 55 days?

Question =Please provide a specification for the Sanitary Sewer system.

Plan Sheet / Specification Reference=Item 55, 56 and 57- MSE Walls
Location A,B,& C - Walls # 2, 5, & 7 

Question = Special provisions section 10-1.34 requires a settlement period for these MSE structures.  Will the contractor be required to place a settlement fill for the entire zone of the straps and then remove the material, or does the settlement period only relate to the construction of the concrete cap on top.  There is no quantity for structure excavation for item 55 (Location A) and the QTY for items 56 and 57 does not appear to account for overbuilding the embankment and then removing the fill prior to constructing the wall.

Plan Sheet / Specification Reference=Item #146: Minor Concrete (Textured Paving) plan sheet detail C-7, Special Provisions section 10-1.78 (page 359)

Question = The specification denotes that the contract price paid for the Textured Paving is to include aggregate base. The detail shown on sheet C-7 denotes that the Textured Paving is on compacted subgrade. Please clarify.

  • Should there be a need to raise the grade due the grade being lower or over-excavation, class II base would be used and paid for as part of the contract Item #146: Minor Concrete (Textured Paving).



Plan Sheet / Specification Reference= CIDH Pile Rock Sockets

Question = The pile data table identifies the elevation of top of estimated hard rock. Please confirm that the rock socket bid item unit price will be paid from the top of hard rock actually encountered. Also, please clarify who is responsible for determining the actual elevation at which hard rock is encountered in the field.

  • Refer to the Pile Data Tables shown on the plans and to the Special Provisions, Section 10-1.51 "PILING," subsections "Cast-In-Drilled-Hole Concrete Piles" and "Measurement and Payment (Piling)." Bid per the current contract bid documents.


Plan Sheet / Specification Reference=Speical Provisions Section 10-1.34

Question = Is a settlement embankment required for the retaining walls adjacent to the bridges, and if required will the removal be paid as roadway excavation as surplus material?

  •  Please refer to addendum #2.


Plan Sheet / Specification Reference= Item #76 Concrete Pavement and Sec.10-1.50 Jointed Plain Concrete Pavement.

Question = There is a pay item #76 for concrete pavement and no items for seal pavement. The Measurement and Payment section states that sealing joints will be paid by the meter.
Will there be an addendum adding a pay item for sealing of concrete pavement joints? If not, how will the sealing of the concrete pavement joints be paid?

  • There has been an oversite regarding the contract item for Seal Pavement Joint, so please bid per the current contract documents.


Plan Sheet / Specification Reference= Layout Drawing L-3 Sheet 12 and Layout Drawing L-4 Sheet 13

Question = On Layout drawing L-3 NB Rt 67 at merge with NW Line (Sta. 290+92.392 to Sta. 291+92.392)and drawing L-3 & L-4 SB Rt 67 at merge with ES Line (Sta. 89+29.316 to Sta. 90+80.873), the drawings indicate new structural section "H", base and paving outside of K-Rail protection. The removal and replacement of this structural section cannot be done in one shift. Is it the intent to preform this work with mutiple lane closures or will K-Rail be placed to protect the excavation?

Question = The dimensions on the Type F Inlet is said to be shown on the Plans. Though at both locations, 5-V and 12-DD on the Drainage Plan, there is nothing. Is there a different location that this information can be found?

Plan Sheet / Specification Reference= Unconfined compression test (ASTM D2938)

Sample tested from boring B-10-05...sample 25. (Bridge #1120)

Question = Information obtained during viewing of cores, up in Sacramento, in your Trans Lab,shows a break test that was performed on 1/3/2006, from the above boring breaking @ 6716.6 TSF (93,277PSI)!!

Is this a typo/mis-print?...or is this factual data correct?, and the possiblity of drilling in Granite rock this hard exist?

  • An error was made when the test data was transfered to the summary sheet. If you refer to the actual test sheet in the package you will see that the load at failure for specimen B10-05-25, was 42,546.1 pounds, not 425,461 pounds, or 670 TSF (9,330 psi).

Question = The El Monte Water Line runs through the job-site and under all four proposed bridge structures. Are there load requirements and/or protection requirements for falsework or equipment required to construct these structures within the water-line easement?

  • Please refer to the Notes on U-5 & U-7 sheets 166 and 168 respectively.

Question = Page 1 cover sheet of addendum 2  Sheets 5,15,98,110 120,149,154,156,167 and 168, are revised in addendum 2. The actual plan sheets included are sheets 3,15,98.110,120,149,154,156,167,and 168,  Is this a typo on the cover sheet or is sheet 5 of the plans missing.

  • Sheet 5 as reflected in Addendum #2 is a typo and should be sheet 3.



Plan Sheet / Specification Reference= Bid Item #80 - Estimated 'Rock Socket' quantity;

Question = On Bridge sturcture #1121 (E52-N67 Connector) The pile data table on sheet 450 of 688 identified a minimum of 6.1M of bedrock penetration for Bent 6. If CIDH pile is installed to specified tip elevation (108.4)and continous "Hard to Very Hard" rock is encountered @ Elevation 117.0M, will this portion of the CIDH Piles be paid for under Bid Item #80 for Rock-Socket?

The Log of test borings & Materials information (including unconfined compressive strength) identify 'rock' in excess of that defined for 'Estimated Rock Socket Quantities (Bid Item #80).

As an example:  E.N. Coneector, Boring #B-09-06 is adjacent to Bent #6. This boring identifies "Hard to Very Hard" rock, with compressive strengths in excess of 15,000PSI starting @ Elevation 117M...and continuing to tip Elevation 108.4.

  • At boring no. B-9-06, the core run that begins at elev. 114.5 m has a RQD = 100% and the rock is slightly fractured, as compared to a RQD=66% and moderately to intensely fractured rock for the core run just above (intensely fractured rock has lengths averaging from 30 to 100mm with scattered fragmented intervals). Therefore, the core run just above elev. 114.5 m is not considered to be rock socket material, whereas the core run beginning at elev. 114.5 m is considered to be rock socket material.


Plan Sheet / Specification Reference= Pre Bid Inquiry, Contract 11-2T0004, Bid Date 3/20/08

Question = 1-Ref Contract Item 169, Type 60 C Concrete Barrier- Per Standard Plan A76A the maximum offset in pavement differential is to be 910mm. In reviewing the " Design Study Only" cross sections, and current plan details there are areas of intended Type 60 C Concrete Barrier that exceed the maximum offset. Also, there appears to be requirements for transition details that tie the Type 60 C Concrete Barrier to other barrier types (Typ 60D, Typ 736A and Typ 736 Mod) which are not yet detailed. Plan sheet 44 appears to define payment limits, but is not a clear representation of the work. Plese confirm that a contract CCO will be issued, after award, that provides for the details and changed character for apparent "Modified Typ 60C" barrier on this project.
