The availability or use of information provided in the responses to bidder' inquiries is not to be construed in any way as a waiver of the provisions of Section 2-1.03 of the Standard Specifications or any other provision of the contract, the plans, Standard Specifications or Special Provisions, nor to excuse the contractor from full compliance with those contract requirements. Bidders are cautioned that subsequent responses or contract addenda may affect or vary a response previously given.
Caltrans District 11 Construction Department has developed this method of answering Bidder's Inquiries to better serve the needs of the Contractors who bid on our Projects. Caltrans District 11 Construction Department will post all of the questions submitted by any of the contractors that are registered Planholders for that Contract, but reserves the right to not answer any questions deemed unsatisfactory for public viewing.
The BIDDER'S INQUIRIES & RESPONSES will be updated continuously and all attempts will be made to do the final posting by 15:00 on Wednesday prior to the bid opening.

Question=What are the limits of the Type 60S Modified Barrier? The only
mention is an "End Conc Barrier(Type 60S Mod)notation at Sta 18+79.9 on the
"SD-76" Line on sheet L-3 of the plans. All other notations on the layout
sheets just refer to "Conc Barrier Type (60S)" or to "Conc Barrier Type
(60SC)".
 
  • The beginning of Concrete Barrier (type 60S Mod) is at Sta. 18+60.00 as shown on Sheet L-3 of  contract plans.

Question=Page 143 (Special Provisions)TAPERED NOTCHED WEDGE (LONGITUDINAL JOINTS)
At the Contractor's option longitudinal joints may be constructed using a device attached to the screed that will form a tapered notched wedge in a single pass. Longitudinal joints constructed with a tapered notched wedge shall be compacted to
a minimum relative compaction of 93 percent. If longitudinal joints are constructed in this manner, the Contractor shall conduct quality control testing in conformance with the provisions in Section 6-3.02, "Testing By Contractor," of the Standard Specifications, and provide results that include the following:
With regard to paving the longitudinal joints, what other method or methods may be used by the contractor that will be accepted by Caltrans?

  • Should the paving operation complete the pavement, without any drop-off at the longitudinal borders of the lane line or the edge of travel way prior to opening the roadway to public traffic would eliminate the need for Tapered Notched Wedge.

Also, if an alternate method is chosen, will the contractor be responsible for quality control testing as with the tapered notched wedge method?

  • Regardless of the option chosen by the contractor, the contractor is responsible for quality control, in accordance with Section 6-3 "Testing" of the Standard Specifications.

R:12/29/05		 Plan Sheet / Specification Reference=Item # 23 RECONSTRUCT FENCE

Question=Upon site visitation, the fence to be reconstructed is not per Caltrans Standard A85, but is more like San Diego Regional Standard Drawing D-82 “Debris Fence”.
Please advise to specification to be used, the existing concrete footing size of fence and if the footings have to be removed for the reconstruct of the fence.
 
  • Fence reconstruction should be done in accordance with section A-85 of the July 2004 Standard Drawing, as specified in the Special Provisions.

Q:12/28/05 R:12/29/05		 Plan Sheet / Specification Reference=Barrier Mounted Sign Detail

Question=Ref Plan Sheet 71, SD-2:
 1- Other Districts eg, 07, 12, 08 have a design that is apparently satifactory for installing barrier mounted signs. Will an alternate  mounting detail be permitted in lieu of the costly and time consuming detail shown on your plan sheet 71?
2- Define the length of the added # 13 longitudinal rebar that is shown on the anchorage detail, between the anchor bolts.

Question=1- Ref Cross sections for Rte 76 shown on Plan Sheet 2 of 87 ( X-1)- Request that a detail be provided for this area that complys with the requirements of Standard Plan A76G to place Type 60S and 60SC barrier on ..."Pvmnt or well compacted base".
