 R:09/15/05
Plan Sheet / Specification Reference=Item 103, Special Provisions Section 10-1.22, Plan sheet 97 and 104.

Question=1- Provide hours of full freeway and ramp closure for N/B Rte 5 and off ramp to Harbor Dr. Chart # 7 provides for the ramp closure but there appears to be no full Northbound freeway closure identified.

  • Installation of the overhead sign structure of contract item #103 will be accomodated by  coordinating a traffic break through the CHP.

  Q:09/16/05
 R:09/16/05
Plan Sheet / Specification Reference=Pre Bid Inquiry # 2, Dept of Transportation Response.

Question=1- Give us an idea  of when during a day ( or  night), what day of the week and, for how long a period of time this CHP traffic break will be avaliable, so we can provide a reasonably accurate price for Item 103.

  • Traffic break for the sign structure installation, due to its non-emergency nature could be any time on a week night possibly from past midnight/Monday morning thru Thursday night/friday morning. Duration for a traffic break, based on a past experience has been the time it takes for one or two cranes to raise and slip and secure the two collars of the  truss sign structure over the existing posts. Inserting and tightening of the nuts and bolts would not require a traffic break and could be done in the safety of lane closures per lane closure charts of the Special Provisions.

Plan Sheet / Specification Reference=Item #75 Seal Longitudinal isolation Joint. Sec 10-1.44 Jointed Plain Concrete Pavement /  Construction  Longitudinal isolation Joints, page 210

Question= It states that , "The edge of existing pavement shall be saw cut a width 3mm and ........."
Will you please clear up the misunderstanding in the field. that the "3mm" is the
width of the saw cut (Blade width)and the actual location of the saw cut is a
minimum of 25mm - 50mm from existing edge or as per plans.

  • Any concern regarding a possible misinterpretation of the contract specifications by the field personnel, should be addressed with the RE.

  Q:09/21/05
 R:09/21/05
Plan Sheet / Specification Reference=

The staging plans do not show falsework for the construction of the pier
caps.  The caps will require falsework. The specifications require k-rail be
used when falsework is adjecent to traffic. The falsework will also creat a
clearance of less than 14'. What solution is availabel to the contractor to
relieve this problem that will be acceptable to Caltrans?

  • Please refer to Chart No. 10 of the Special provisions. The complete closure of the roadway addresses the clearance concerns mentioned.
