Ramp Metering
Over the years, Caltrans has implemented ramp and freeway connector metering as an effectivetraffic management strategy. Ramp meters operate most effectively when upstream mainline
traffic is controlled. This control has been accomplished in District 7 by metering on-ramp to
freeways and metering freeway-to-freeway connectors. The primary objective of metering is to
reduce congestion and the overall travel time of motorists on the freeway. Other benefits include
increasing motorist safety by reducing congestion-related accidents and air pollution caused by
vehicle emissions.
