New Quality Coordinator to Maintain Caltrans High Standards

Team makes sure Caltrans maintains quality in the quantity of work we do.

“Quality in Caltrans (QIC) is part of everyone’s job and is an essential component of the Department’s mission to Improve Mobility Across California,” says new Quality Coordinator Khan Hossain of the Division of Design. “This valuable program is a collaborative effort between Caltrans management and staff to improve the way Caltrans does business.”

The QIC program identifies the Department’s mandate to continuously improve the quality of services and products so that the Department becomes the transportation organization of choice for our customers, he adds.

Under the guidance of Chief Deputy Raja Mitwasi, the QIC team comprises a representative from each Division. Hossain has led the 11-member QIC team since May. “Team members are advocates who facilitate applying quality principles and new ideas to keep Caltrans at the highest level,” Hossain says.

Current Members include: Ron Longazo and Martha Hetzler, Construction; Dave White, External affairs; John Zaki, Maintenance; Jorge Fuentes, Operations; Mirna Dagher and Betty Bahraini, Program and Project Management; Karl Price, Environmental Planning; Shen Wen Cheng, Administration; and Melissa Joshi, Transportation Planning.

“The QIC is a validation of hard work,” Mitwasi says. “We don’t do this because we have to, we use QIC to assist and mark continuous improvements in the way we will do business now and in the future.”

Hossain emphasizes individual development to achieve the Department’s goals. “Quality is a part of our job; it is a way for us to always work. It challenges the normal process which is old, innovates the new process and promotes hard work to achieve a quality product.”

He encourages all employees to bring new and innovative ideas and suggestions to their QIC team representative “to improve the things we do every day in Caltrans.”

The QIC team intends to announce its action plan for the year soon. It will continue the Employee of the Year Award. The QIC program also coordinates many other awards, including the Excellence in Transportation Awards, Tranny Awards and Outstanding Management in Engineering Award. “For this function, we act as a liaison -- to process, coordinate and facilitate these awards,” Hossain adds.
