Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS)

Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) are defined as “the application of advanced sensor, computer, electronics, and communication technologies and management strategies.” This is an integrated manner to improve safety and efficiency of the surface transportation system. Examples of ITS include ramp metering, real-time traveler information systems, and loop detectors.

The Central Coast ITS Implementation Plan is the roadmap, the implementation schedule, and integrated framework to connect ITS projects together in Caltrans District 5.

For more information about ITS in your area, please contact the Regional Transportation Planning Agency (RTPA) or Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) for your region.
