The Caltrans Adopt-A-Highway (AAH) Program

The Caltrans Adopt-A-Highway (AAH) Program provides an avenue for individuals, organizations, agencies or businesses to help maintain sections of roadsides within California’s State Highway System. Groups have the option to participate as volunteers or to hire an AAH service contractor to perform the work on their behalf. Groups that hire contractors are called “sponsors”.
Adoption sites usually span a two-mile stretch of roadside and permits are issued for five-year periods.

Participation can include one or more of the following activities:
• Removing litter (work frequency varies with location).
• Planting and establishing trees and shrubs or wildflowers.
• Removing graffiti.
• Controlling vegetation.

The Adopt-A-Highway (AAH) Program is a voluntary program and is solely administered by the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans). Participation is free for all volunteers and standard recognition panels (signs) are included at no charge.

AAH service contractors are independent, private companies who work for the sponsors (they do not work for Caltrans) and charge fees for their services (see link: Adopt-A-Highway Sponsor FAQs.pdf).
