Westbound Interstate 8/Tavern Road On-ramp Closed Four Days Beginning Friday Morning
SAN DIEGO—Caltrans crews will close the westbound Interstate 8 (I-8) on-ramp from Tavern Road for four consecutive days beginning Friday at 9 a.m. until Tuesday at 5 a.m. to install a new drainage system.
Signs will be placed detouring motorists on Tavern Road to westbound Alpine Boulevard, to northbound Dunbar Lane to westbound I-8.
Motorists may also take Tavern Road to eastbound I-8 to W. Willow Road north, and then to the westbound I-8 On-ramp.
The extended weekend work entails excavating a trench six feet wide and 20 feet deep across the ramp to allow installation of a new 48-inch diameter storm drain. The work will be noisy at times, especially during rock-breaking activities. The work will continue 24 hours a day until the operation is completed.
Crews will work to minimize construction noise to nearby businesses and residents.
This latest segment of work is part of a project to replace a drainage system installed in 1968. Years of sand and gravel washing through the old drainage system during storm events wore out the bottom of the pipes. Water seeping through the pipes eroded the surrounding dirt, ultimately causing a dip in the freeway.
Caltrans has already constructed a 280-foot long tunnel, eight feet in diameter, 40 feet underneath the freeway and installed new 72-inch diameter pipe. The entire project is expected to be completed in summer, depending on weather conditions. The freeway dip will be addressed separately.
