Bakersfield 99 Rehabilitation (South)

Project Description

The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) proposes to resurface, restore, and rehabilitate State Route 99 in Kern County from 0.07 mile north of the White Lane Overcrossing to the California Avenue Overcrossing. To relieve congestion, improve operational deficiencies, and enhance safety, an auxiliary lane would be built between California Avenue and southbound State Route 99 to the State Route 58 eastbound connector ramp. The auxiliary lane would require building a new retaining wall, widening the California Avenue Undercrossing, and replacing the Palm Avenue Overcrossing. A soundwall would be built between the Wilson Road Overcrossing and the Wible Road Overcrossing. This project would also upgrade or install new safety barriers, signs, and Traffic Management System elements throughout the project limits to meet current standards.

Project Benefits

Purpose

The purpose of this project is to restore this segment of State Route 99 to a state of good repair to minimize maintenance expenditures, improve operational deficiencies, and relieve congestion between southbound State Route 99 at California Avenue and the State Route 99/58 Interchange.

Need

The condition of the pavement within the project limits has severely deteriorated due to considerable storm damage and the heavy amount of truck traffic on this segment. This has resulted in increased costs to maintain the existing pavement and the inability of state forces to continually maintain this section of freeway in good condition for the traveling public.

The auxiliary lane proposed in this project is needed to improve operational deficiencies and relieve congestion caused by increasing traffic volumes and nonstandard spacing between southbound State Route 99 at California Avenue and the State Route 99/58 Interchange.
