Dr. Elizabeth Deakin's Presentation on "Bay Area System Plan for a Regional Express Bus Service"

Dr. Elizabeth Deakin was the featured speaker at the department's April 2005 Research Connection video conference.
Elizabeth Deakin is the Director of the University of California Transportation Research Center and Associate Professor of City and Regional Planning at UC Berkely. Her research focuses on transportation and land use policy and the environmental impacts of transportation. She has published over 100 articles, book chapters, and reports over the past fifteen years, on topics ranging from transportation pricing to development exactions and impact fees. Over the past year, she has been carrying out research on the promise and pitfalls of sustainable development under projects sponsored by the German Marshall Fund, the Transit Cooperative Research Board, the Transport Ministers of the European Union, and several private foundations.
She recently traveled to Stockholm, Berlin, Den Haag, and Edinburgh to meet with government officials on sustainable transportation, as part of a group of officials sponsored by the US federal government, and is writing a report comparing sustainable transportation practices in those countries and the US. She also is working with the California Department of Transportation on ways to improve their planning processes to better reflect social, economic, environmental, and technological change, and with the Bay Area Rapid Transit District on policies for better integrating land use and transit investment.
Deakin is currently the chair of the National Academy of Sciences' Advisory Board on Surface Transportation-Environmental Research and the NAS Committee on Vehicle Inspection and Maintenance. She also serves as the California Legislature's representative on the state's independent review committee on vehicle inspection maintenance. She previously has served as a member of the Alameda County Transportation Commission, and chaired the City of Berkeley Transportation Commission for nine years. She has served as an editor or editorial board member for Transportation Research Record, Transportation Planning and Technology, Transportation Policy, and Urban Affairs Quarterly. She chaired the Transportation Research Board's Transportation and Land Development Committee from 1991-1997 and has served as a member of several other committees for TRB and other professional organizations. She also has served as Vice Chair of the California Planning Foundation. She is a member of the advisory board of the Institute of Transportation Studies at UC Berkeley and formerly served on the board of the Institute of Urban and Regional Development, for which she was acting director in 1997-98.
Deakin holds SB and SM degrees from MIT (political science and civil engineering/transportation systems analysis) as well as a law degree from Boston College.
