University Transportation Centers

The University Transportation Centers (UTC) are internationally recognized centers of excellence, fully integrated within institutions of higher learning, that serve as a vital source of leaders who are prepared to meet the nation’s need for safe, efficient and environmentally sound movement of people and goods.  Their mission is to advance U.S. technology and expertise in the many disciplines comprising transportation through the mechanisms of education, research, and technology transfer at university-based centers of excellence.

California University Transportation Centers (UTCs):

Moving Ahead for Progress in the 21st Century Act (MAP-21)

The University of California Center on Economic Competitiveness in Transportation (UCCONNECT)

The University of California Center on Economic Competitiveness in Transportation (UCCONNECT) led by the University of California, Berkeley (UCB).  The UCCONNECT primarily supports the activities of Caltrans’ Divisions of Transportation Planning, Rail and Mass Transportation and Traffic Operations.  The UTC’s primary strategic goal is Economic Competitiveness, and will pursue projects that are related to reducing congestion, improving highway operations and enhancing freight productivity.

Fixing America's Surface Transportation Act (FAST Act)

The Pacific Southwest Region University Transportation Center (PSR UTC)

The Pacific Southwest Region University Transportation Center (PSR UTC) is led by the University of Southern California and includes seven partners: California State University, Long Beach, University of California, Davis, University of California, Irvine, University of California, Los Angeles, University of Hawaii, Northern Arizona University, and Pima Community College. The PSR UTC will address the FAST Act research priority area of Improving Mobility of People and Goods by conducting an integrated, multidisciplinary program of research, education and technology transfer aimed at improving the mobility of people and goods throughout the region. The PSR UTC program is organized around four themes: 1) technology to address transportation problems and improve mobility; 2) improving mobility for vulnerable populations; 3) Improving resilience and protecting the environment; and 4) managing mobility in high growth areas.
