Field Operational Tests of Vehicle-Assist and Automation (VAA) system using full-size Public Transit Buses

Task Description

The proposed task will conduct field testing using three transit buses equipped with the VAA system developed from the previous task. The tests include system performance testing and the final field operational tests (FOT) at LTD and AC Transit. The performance testing will be first conducted to ensure the safety and successful execution of the field operational tests.  Transit drivers will be trained to operate the VAA buses.  Per US DOT's requirement, a minimum of six month revenue service tests (carrying passengers)  will be Conducted on the EMx BRT line in Eugene, Oregon and the HOV lane along the state highway 92 in the Bay area.  Quantitative data (such as lateral accuracy, passenger counts, dwelling time)  for measuring the most significant aspects of system performance will be collected and qualitative measures (such as ease-of-use, the human machine interface design, ride comfort)  will be obtained through interviews with drivers and passengers.  Field demonstrations to stake holders will be performed and workshops conducted to transit operators and professionals.

Task Objective

The objective of the task is to conduct field operational tests of the VAA system in transit revenue service for 6 months to demonstrate the technical feasibility of two VAA technology applications and how it benefits to transit agency operational efficiency, performance and service quality, and to identify and document their costs and benefits.
