The standards Caltrans are interested in are: quality control/quality assurance, design structures and methodology, construction practices and specifications, overlap practice and design, and long-life pavement rehabilitation. Although PRC is dedicated to improving concrete, asphalt, and pavement in transportation, they should also be concerned with IEEE standards in their computer modeling as well as military standards in their rigorous standard practices for sealing concrete for example.
Partners for Advanced Transit and Highway’s mission is: applying advanced technology to increase highway capacity and safety, and to reduce traffic congestion, air pollution, and energy consumption.
While all of these elements are crucial in maintaining their mission, PATH needs to recognize that there are a myriad of standards, construction, maintenance, software IEEE standards for instance, that pertain to them.
The Advanced Highway Maintenance and Construction Technology Research Center has guided many of Caltrans industry research in maintenance and construction technology. AHMCT’s innovations have improved the safety and facilitated man laborious tasks. They have also increased efficiency by utilizing computers, robotics, sensors, interfaces, GPS, GIS, etc. in their research. The standards that AHMCT should be aware of include IEEE, military, and also manufacturing standards like finite lifetime.
