CHILI GULCH – Heavy rains undermined and nearly washed away a portion of State Route 193, north of Placerville in El Dorado County. After months of planning and study, and 90 working days – the roadway was fully restored for the nearly 2,500 drivers who use this highway every day.
In this Caltrans News Flash, we show you how Caltrans drilled down to ensure that mountainous roads like this one are rebuilt on solid ground and what engineers devised and constructed to make sure the road doesn't slip again.
