SACRAMENTO – The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) has scheduled traffic interfering roadwork requiring multiple lane closures on westbound Interstate 80 in North Sacramento over two-consecutive weekends this month that will add major delays for motorists. The ongoing work is part of the $133 million 80 "Across the Top" project scheduled for completion by fall of this year.

Westbound Interstate 80 will be reduced to two lanes from Longview Drive to Winters Street in North Sacramento due to demolition and pavement construction work. In addition, Caltrans will close the Longview Drive on-ramp to westbound I-80 and the Winters Street off-ramp from westbound I-80. To reach westbound I-80 from Longview Drive, motorists will be directed to follow eastbound I-80 to Watt Avenue to turn around.

For safety reasons, Caltrans must close off the entrance to the right "Local Lane" east of Longview Drive, leaving only the two far left "Express Lanes" open to traffic. As a result, motorists will have no access to the freeway exits at Winters Street, Raley Boulevard, Norwood Avenue and Northgate Boulevard.

Motorists looking for access to these local streets can use the following detour: Take the westbound I-80 express lanes, exit at Truxel Road and get back onto eastbound I-80. Delays of more than 30 minutes are to be expected.

The lane reductions will start at 10 p.m. Friday, August 19 and continue through 5 a.m. Monday, August 22. Motorists are encouraged to use Business 80 as an alternate route.

On the following weekend, construction crews will do a complete shutdown of the "Local Lanes" or the number 2 and 3 lanes to westbound Interstate 80 just west of Truxel Road. These lanes, will be redirected to Interstate 5. The closures are scheduled from 6 p.m. Friday, August 26 to 5 a.m. Monday, August 29.

The far left "Express Lane" will be the only lane open for westbound I-80 to San Francisco until it reopens back to three lanes at the Sacramento River. There will be no access to West El Camino Avenue from westbound I-80. The north and southbound I-5 connector ramps to westbound I-80 will be closed. The northbound Truxel Road on-ramp to westbound I-80 will also be closed.

For access to West El Camino Avenue from I-5, motorists and commercial truckers can use westbound Arena Boulevard, then head south on El Centro Road to West El Camino Avenue.

For an alternate route to westbound I-80 San Francisco, motorists in the far right "Local Lanes" should follow southbound I-5, connect to westbound U.S. Highway 50 to the I-80 junction towards Davis.

The closure is needed for safety reasons and to accommodate demolition and pavement construction work between West El Camino Avenue and the Sacramento River. Delays up to one hour is expected. Access to and from eastbound I-80 will remain open.

Caltrans urges motorists to plan ahead before travelling along this corridor by using an alternate route and to expect serious delays with extended distances. Additional information is available at 80AcrosstheTop.com
