SACRAMENTO - As El Niño storms continue to deliver much-needed rain to Northern California, Caltrans has sped up efforts to prevent leaks and protect steel portions of the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge, officials said Friday.
Caltrans officials signed a maintenance order in late December for up to $3 million of work with Benicia-based Golden State Bridge Inc. to assist Caltrans engineers as they refill or replace grease caps, add weep holes, and caulk steel elements and reinforcement within the concrete structure where needed for further weather protection.
This maintenance work is funded by the Bay Area Toll Authority’s existing Toll Bridge Rehabilitation funding. The current scope is expected to be well under $3 million at completion, which is expected by mid-2016.
These are some of the water control issues that maintenance crews continue to monitor and tighten on an ongoing basis. Though the bridge was never expected to be completely water tight, Caltrans crews continue to limit the steel components’ exposure to moisture.
The work addresses an issue that was previously identified but became more apparent as Northern California began experiencing its first heavy rain season since the bridge was completed in 2013. The need for such work was discovered during routine inspections. These repairs are considered to be proactive and are expected to mitigate future concerns in this part of the bridge.
Engineers and workers involved in the Bay Bridge project are committed to transparency and communicating complex engineering issues as clearly as possible. Engineers have traveled the state meeting with universities, public and private-sector engineers, metallurgists, experts, and critics—and have posted hundreds of thousands of records online including fact sheets, construction documents, and photos and videos that help explain how the bridge works.
