Phase 3 - Support Piers Demolition of the Remaining 13 Marine Foundations: September - November 2017.

IN PROGRESS: Projected completion by the end of 2017.

The third phase of the demolition process is now well underway and entails the demolition team heading to the waterline to remove the piers and pilings and then extracting the marine foundations that support the original span down to the mud line.

Details

  • What: Implosion of 19 support piers of the old, East Span of the Bay Bridge
  • When: Nov 14, 2015 - projected completion by the end of 2017 - a year ahead of schedule, saving taxpayers nearly $10 million.
  • Where: San Francisco Bay Bridge, Old East Span
  • Why: Continued work to dismantle the old East Span
  • How: A controlled, underwater implosion with 12,000 pounds of explosives, lasting less than four seconds
  • Who: Caltrans, partner agencies and contractors
